About 35,000 domestic and international students study in this university. Ritsumeikan University was ranked 801-1000 in the QS World Rankings. Of the six Japanese universities listed in the QS World University Rankings, Jestertsumikan University was the only private institution from Western Japan.

The school spirit of liberalism and internationalism championed by Prince Sion-ji was blended with the ideals of academic freedom and enthusiasm by Kojuro Nakagawa and became the tradition of the university. This tradition survived even the intense pressure of pre-war days, as Ritsumeikan University accepted seventeen professors who were forced by the government to leave Kyoto Imperial University for their pacifist activities.

After World War II, Ritsumeikan adopted an educational philosophy of peace and democracy that was consistent with the spirit of the Japanese Constitution and the Education Constitution. In 1948, Ritsumeikan was one of the first Japanese universities to be organized under the new university system. The Ritsumeikan carried out extensive reforms to ensure the democratic governance of the university and to better serve society as an educational institution open to the public.
